Homework – Week 1

Great class, y’all. It was really nice to meet everybody and having such a large group will make it way more fun. Not a lot of homework for this week, but I’d really like to encourage you all to push your sketches as far as you can. Feel free to impress me.

Here’s your homework, due by next Tuesday 9am:

1) Create a Processing sketch using a library - Using a library either from the Processing.org website or one that you find on your own (you might like the MacBook Sudden Motion Sensor or the Ambient Light Sensor Libraries for some cool inputs), create a sketch that utilizes the library in a new and interesting way. You can use one of your old projects or an example sketch from the library itself, but you must attribute any borrowed code to the authors and you must point out what sections of the code you created yourself.

2) Add your work to the class blog - By now you should have received a link from WordPress with account setup info. Go ahead and set up your account, and then create a post that has all of these things:

  • An screenshot of your project
  • A video of your sketch in action (Vimeo is great for this kind of thing. Make an account if you don’t already have one, you’ll use it a lot.)
  • A description of what your sketch does
  • A brief mention about what code you took from other sources/examples
  • A link to your code. Also, please include a link to the library you are using so I can install it on my computer to try out your stuff
  • And most importantly, describe what you added to the code to make it yours

Check this example if you want to see exactly what I’m looking for. If you are having troubles getting your sketch going, it doesn’t matter. Send me an email ASAP and maybe we can fix, but even if not, you still have to make a post to the site telling me why. This is how I’m going to grade you, so don’t miss one!

3) BRING ME MONEY – For the 12 of you who were part of the group SparkFun order, please bring $54.92 to class next week. If you are writing a check, make it out to Thomas Hines. DO NOT FORGET. MONEY IS VERY IMPORTANT.
